Ceramic tiles are one of the most practical finishes for floors and walls: they're durable, easy to clean and available in endless designs. With a little routine care, they'll keep looking as good as the day they were installed.
Keep sand and dust under control
Fine sand acts like sandpaper underfoot and slowly dulls the surface. Sweep or vacuum regularly, especially near entrances, and place mats at the doors to catch sand before it spreads through the home.
Clean gently
Warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner are all most tiles need. Avoid harsh acids, bleach and abrasive pads, which can wear down the glaze and the grout over time. Rinse with clean water and dry the floor to prevent streaks.
Look after the grout
Grout is the part that shows wear first. A grout sealer helps it resist stains and moisture, and cleaning the joints with a soft brush every few weeks keeps them from darkening.
Protect against moisture and impact
A few habits go a long way:
- Ventilate bathrooms and kitchens to limit humidity and mould in the joints.
- Put felt pads under furniture legs and lift heavy items instead of dragging them.
- Replace a cracked tile early so water can't get underneath it.
Start with a good installation
Most tile problems trace back to how the tiles were laid. Proper surface preparation, the right adhesive and well-finished joints make care easier for years to come.
